Over the years, the fibers trigger chronic inflammation, cellular damage, and genetic mutations that eventually cause tumors to form. Medical research places mesothelioma's latency period at 20 to 40 years, meaning a diagnosis today may trace directly back to shipboard exposure decades ago.
