W.R. Grace

The asbestos company W.R. Grace was founded in Peru in 1854. The operations of the company were later moved to New York. They manufactured sealants, fireproofing materials, cement, and many other asbestos products. In 1963, W.R. Grace purchased the Zonolite Company, which enabled them to extend their line of products to insulation compounds. This newly created division also sold and distributed the mineral known as vermiculite. For almost 40 years, starting in 1938, W.R Grace used asbestos in some of their products. They were mainly endangering the lives of insulators and construction workers who were required to interact with these products.

W.R. Grace employees exposed to asbestos

After purchasing a vermiculite mine and a processing mill nearby Libby, Montana, the company began manufacturing up to 200,000 tons of vermiculite every year, which was contaminated with significant amounts of asbestos, as asbestos occurs in close proximity to vermiculite in the earth. For this reason, workers were heavily exposed to asbestos, as they were not required to wear appropriate protective equipment on the job. The occupations at highest risk of developing a serious disease as a result of the asbestos exposure which may have occurred either working at W.R. Grace or by working with their products are:

Considering the fact that asbestos-related diseases may take a long time to develop, it's extremely important that anyone who has a history of asbestos exposure regularly monitor their health. In the interest of promoting the importance of early diagnosis, we are offering screenings free of charge for W.R. Grace employees.
