Overview

Ethylene oxide (EtO) is a colorless gas used to sterilize medical equipment and as a chemical intermediate. The EPA classified it as a known human carcinogen in 2016. Communities living within several miles of EtO-emitting facilities face elevated cancer risk, as do workers inside the plants.
