October 2025 - ETO Update
We want to share the latest developments in the Ethylene Oxide Sterilization Facility cases.
We continue to develop and gather scientific evidence of the harmful toxic emissions from these numerous facilities.
We are working to engage these facilities in a mediation/settlement process for a potential out of court resolution.
Should mediation/settlement prove not effective, we will look further at pursuing litigation against these facilities to recover for injuries and/or property damage incurred by you. The evidence gathered will be extremely important as we prepare to enter into a mediation/settlement process and/or litigation.

2025 Illinois ethylene oxide settlements
Sotera Health, the parent company of Sterigenics, has settled 129 ethylene oxide claims in July for its Illinois facility. Another batch of claims was resolved in April, where 97 EtO claims were settled.
2025 B. Braun settlements
B. Braun announced in February 2025 that the company had resolved most of its ethylene oxide claims in the United States, but the number of claimants and the amount were confidential.
2024 Louisiana settlements
Shell Chemical had reached a settlement with the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) for multiple violations in the company’s Geismar facility, including excess ethylene oxide emissions. The company settled over $20,000 for ten violations.
2024 California lawsuits
At least twelve new plaintiffs had filed a lawsuit against Sterigenics U.S., LLC, alleging that EtO emissions from the company’s Vernon facility were the cause of their or their loved ones’ cancer.
2023 Georgia settlements
Sterigenics U.S. reached a $35 million settlement with 79 plaintiffs over ethylene oxide exposure claims. Despite this, at least 400 claims against Sterigenics were still unsettled in October 2023.
2023 Tennessee public hearings
In June 2023, the EPA held a series of public hearings on the risks of ethylene oxide emissions from DeRoyal’s sterilization plant in New Tazewell.
2023 Tennessee class action lawsuits and other ethylene oxide settlements
Over 800 victims were awarded a $408 million payout for their EtO exposure claim in June 2023. By November 2023, an additional 79 people received a settlement of $35 million.
2022 First ethylene oxide settlement
Illinois was the first state to see an EtO trail. The victim was awarded $363 million as compensation for her breast cancer associated with EtO exposure.
2021 Georgia lawsuits
Following Delaware’s lead, over 150 EtO-related lawsuits were filed against a medical device manufacturing company in Georgia.
2020 Delaware class action lawsuit
A chemical manufacturing company was scrutinized and sued for its unsafe and improper release of ethylene oxide gas. This affected several nearby communities, and a class action lawsuit was filed in Delaware.
