According to existing research, asbestos fibers, when ingested, can accumulate in various regions of the gastrointestinal tract. These include the stomach or small intestine. Over time, it will cause inflammation and genetic damage. Eventually, it can lead to the development of malignant tumors.

In 1981, research from the Science of the Total Environment reported that about one in ten workers heavily exposed to asbestos died from gastrointestinal cancers, including stomach cancer.

A similar study in 1997, examining the impact of asbestos exposure on human health, further discovered the prevalence of gastrointestinal/stomach cancer within 12 different groups of workers routinely exposed to asbestos. These include:
