Is there a deadline to seek compensation for the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund?

At our law firm, we offer you a unique level of attention. We hope that these frequently asked questions will help you understand more about the way we work and validate our passion for helping people who are going through difficult situations.

Yes, there is a deadline for accessing money from the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, and considering how many people try to access compensation, we encourage you to contact our attorneys as soon as possible, as evaluating your case and processing these claims takes a while.

The deadline for accessing money from the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund is October 1, 2090

Although the Victim Compensation Fund encourages you to file a claim after you have been certified by the WTC Health Program for a 9/11-related health condition and as soon as the scope of your claimed losses is known so that your claim can be reviewed as fast as possible, the last date on which anyone can file a claim is October 1, 2090. The Victim Compensation Fund Permanent Authorization Act extends the claim filing deadline from December 18, 2020, to October 1, 2090, and appropriates funds as may be necessary to pay all eligible claims.

There is a separate deadline for registration with the Victim Compensation Fund. Registration is not the same as filing a claim, as it preserves your right to file your claim in the future and does not obligate you to file a claim. Registration serves only to alert the Victim Compensation Fund that you may be a potential claimant. You do not have to have been diagnosed with a 9/11-related condition in order to register. We encourage you to register now. Still, the registration deadline is not the same for everyone. It is determined according to the claim type and varies based on individual circumstances.

If you registered a claim on or before July 29, 2021, you have met your registration deadline, and your claim, if you file one, will be determined to be timely filed. For personal injury claims, you are required to register within 2 years of the date on which a federal, state, or local government entity notifies you that your health condition is 9/11-related.

For deceased claims, if the victim previously registered a claim by the applicable deadline, the claim is automatically considered to have been timely registered. If the victim did not register a claim, the Personal Representative is required to register a deceased claim within 2 years of the victim's death or the date on which the Victim Compensation Fund verifies the condition that caused the death as 9/11-related.
