Yes, more and more evidence that suggests a connection between PFAS (per- and polyfluoralkyl substances) exposure and higher chances of developing liver cancer continues to pile up.

Findings from the scientific community and regulators

There are several studies, investigations, and other forms of scientific research from scientists, reputable institutions, organizations, and even regulators that associate PFAS, also known as ‘forever chemicals’, with serious health issues like liver cancer. Some of the notable findings include:

  • Environ Res (2019): A cohort study that examined male factory workers exposed to PFAS. Scientists discovered this: employees with elevated 'cumulative internal doses' of PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) have greater risks of dying from liver cirrhosis or liver cancer.
  • Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California (2022): Individuals found to have higher concentrations of perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) in their blood are 4.5 times more likely to have hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common form of liver cancer that claims the lives of at least 12,000 Americans every year. PFOS is another form of PFAS.
  • International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC): PFOA is classified 'carcinogenic to humans'. This means exposure to this PFAS type can cause cancer. Additionally, the IARC labelled PFOS as 'possibly carcinogenic to humans', the classification designated for substances that have the potential to cause cancer based on existing evidence. Both PFOA and PFOS are commonly used to manufacture aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), a type of firefighting foam known for its effectiveness in combating Class-B fires.
