Although specific base rankings for thyroid disease aren’t available, studies suggest that the Air Force and Army have a higher incidence of thyroid disorders. England Air Force Base and China Lake have some of the highest levels of PFAS contamination, which are linked to thyroid disorder problems.

Military bases with severe PFAS contamination levels

More than 700 military facilities nationwide have toxic environmental contamination, with PFAS levels reaching alarming levels. Many bases exceed the EPA's guideline of 4 parts per trillion (ppt) by millions of times. In Louisiana, England Air Force Base holds the record with 20,700,000 ppt, which is more than five million times the safe limit. Among the other heavily contaminated sites are Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake (8,000,000 ppt), Patrick Air Force Base (4,338,000 ppt), and Myrtle Beach Air Force Base (2,640,000 ppt).

Due to the decades-long use of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) in firefighting training since the 1970s, these dangerous levels have existed for a considerable period. A 10-year surveillance among service members found that over 40,000 active military personnel were diagnosed with thyroid disorders. Due to greater exposure to PFAS during aircraft firefighting operations, Air Force members have particularly high thyroid disease rates.
