PFAS tend to be highly soluble in water, which means they can spread easily and often end up in bodies of water, including sewage treatment plants and groundwater sources. Runoff discharged from Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) at military bases has been identified as the primary source of PFAS contamination. 

However, those at risk of developing health issues linked to PFAS exposure not only include military personnel and their relatives assigned to PFAS-contaminated army bases but also residents who get their drinking water from contaminated sources.

The most recent estimates showed that PFAS has been detected in as many as 9,323 sites across the country, and that approximately 165 million Americans may have been exposed to these ‘forever chemicals’ through contaminated drinking water.

There is no safe level of exposure to PFAS in drinking water. To minimize health risks, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set enforceable limits for PFOA and PFOS, two of the most commonly studied PFAS types, at 4 parts per trillion (ppt). For reference, it is similar to finding a single drop of food coloring in a container filled with 18 million gallons of water.
