This was a type of brick that was able to withstand extreme heat on a constant basis for a prolonged period of time. Firebricks were mostly used for lining machinery like boilers and furnaces, or in the construction of chimneys.
The firebricks posed an immediate danger to the workers that had to break them down in order to remove machinery that was lined with them. During the removal process, huge quantities of asbestos dust were being spread into the enclosed environment. You could have been exposed if:
- You installed boilers
- You worked as a mason before the 1980s
- You performed demolition work
- You did remodeling work in old buildings
- You entered in contact with the clothes or the gear covered in asbestos dust
