BD Medical's decades of ethylene oxide operations and established health dangers
BD Medical's Sandy facility represents a significant source of ethylene oxide contamination in Utah, affecting one of the most densely populated areas near any EtO sterilization plant in the United States. There are 310,000 residents within five miles of the facility, 163 schools, and numerous daycare centers, creating extensive potential for community exposure.
The EPA has conducted risk modeling of the surrounding neighborhoods and found alarming levels of cancer risks. Cancer rates are as high as 3,000 cases per million in the areas immediately adjacent to the BD Medical plant, meaning 3,000 more cancer cases per million people exposed continuously over 70 years. Residents living within a few blocks of the plant are at increased risk of 100 in a million or greater, even in areas farther from the facility.
The facility's ethylene oxide sterilization operations have continued for decades despite the well-documented carcinogenic properties of EtO. The chemical is especially hazardous as a mutagen that causes direct DNA damage in children and developing organisms. Although these voluntary measures came only after extensive EPA scrutiny and community pressure, BD Medical has acknowledged these dangers and committed to installing advanced emission control systems designed to reduce EtO emissions by 90 to 95 percent.
The EPA identified BD Medical's Sandy plant as one of 23 commercial sterilizers with the highest risk of ethylene oxide emissions. Public health concerns have arisen as a result of the facility's location in a heavily populated suburban area and its massive production of IV catheters and blood collection devices.
