First responders affected by AFFF exposure: eligible for compensation

By Michael Bartlett on August 19th, 2025 in

As first responders, firefighters face high risks for developing serious conditions as a result of exposure to PFAS, the key ingredient in AFFF. For decades, firefighters relied on AFFF for its ability to suppress fires rapidly. The DoD even designated AFFF as a firefighting standard for all branches of the armed forces until alarming health issues began to emerge.

Research has since established how prolonged exposure to PFAS can increase the likelihood of developing chronic health conditions, including fatal ones. Firefighters who use AFFF are among those who are at greatest risk.

Legal avenues in recovering compensation for exposure to AFFF

Since firefighters are first responders to emergencies, they are at high risk of acquiring serious diseases due to prolonged exposure to PFAS chemicals found in AFFF. As a result, they can seek compensation for health conditions linked to PFAS exposure. They generally have two options:

  • AFFF claims: for active firefighters and other first responders who have been exposed to AFFF. These include civilian firefighters, those involved and tasked to conduct training exercises, and those who have responded to air crash incidents.
  • VA claims: Retired military firefighters may be entitled to financial compensation from the VA through disability claims. The rate of monthly disability pay depends on several factors, such as the severity of the condition and its impact on the quality of life.

Eligibility requirements

When filing for AFFF exposure or VA claims, the first step often involves determining eligibility. Those qualified should meet certain requirements, including having a documented diagnosis of a serious medical condition caused by PFAS exposure, which includes the following:

Also, you must present evidence of occupational exposure, such as employment records (for civilian firefighters) or military service records (for military firefighters).

Living with any chronic illness can be tough, physically and emotionally, but securing compensation can help alleviate the burden. Firefighters may be compensated for:

  • Medical expenses, including treatment, consultation fees, surgeries, and other necessary medical care
  • Loss of wages or future loss of income
  • Emotional damage
  • Wrongful death (surviving family members can file on behalf of their deceased loved one)
