What compensation options are there for veterans with PFAS-related liver cancer?

Veterans diagnosed with liver cancer linked to PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) exposure may be eligible for compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, disability and wrongful death benefits, and pain and suffering.

Types of compensation

Scientific studies have linked PFAS exposure to an increased risk of liver cancer, and it is a concern for veterans as well. Veterans who developed liver cancer as a result of PFAS exposure during military service may be eligible to receive the following compensation:

  • Medical expenses: Treatment costs, including chemotherapy, surgeries, medications, and other necessary medical services.
  • Lost wages: Recovery for lost income or future lost earnings.
  • VA disability benefits: Benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), including a monthly, tax-free disability pay for veterans with liver cancer. As a presumptive condition, the VA automatically links this condition to military service.
  • Wrongful death benefits: Benefits for the wrongful death of a veteran due to service-related liver cancer.
  • Pain and suffering: Compensation for emotional and mental distress.
