PFAS water contamination claims

For decades, millions of Americans have been unknowingly drinking water contaminated with the toxic PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). Due to their heat, oil, and water-resistant properties, PFAS have found widespread use— from food packaging to firefighting foams. They also earned the moniker “forever chemicals” because of their persistent nature. Currently, these synthetic chemical compounds face intense scrutiny after being linked to numerous health problems, including cancer.

An individual can get exposed to PFAS through multiple pathways, but the most common is through drinking water. A report from the U.S. Geological Survey showed that approximately 45% of tap water in the country contains certain PFAS chemicals, putting the lives of millions of residents at risk. These findings also prompted several residents and organizations to take legal action. Find out if you’re eligible to receive compensation through a PFAS water claim.

Since PFAS do not break down, they tend to accumulate and cause harm to both the environment and human health. Several studies suggested that when absorbed, PFAS can remain for a long period inside the human body and may even lead to increased risks of developing certain serious conditions.

If you develop any of the following diseases after drinking PFAS-contaminated drinking water for at least one cumulative year, we encourage you to reach out to ELG Law:

PFAS exposure through drinking water

PFAS tend to be highly soluble in water, which means they can spread easily and often end up in bodies of water, including sewage treatment plants and groundwater sources. Runoff discharged from Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) at military bases has been identified as the primary source of PFAS contamination.

However, those at risk of developing health issues linked to PFAS exposure not only include military personnel and their relatives assigned to PFAS-contaminated army bases but also residents who get their drinking water from contaminated sources.

The most recent estimates showed that PFAS has been detected in as many as 9,323 sites across the country, and that approximately 165 million Americans may have been exposed to these ‘forever chemicals’ through contaminated drinking water.

There is no safe level of exposure to PFAS in drinking water. To minimize health risks, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set enforceable limits for PFOA and PFOS, two of the most commonly studied PFAS types, at 4 parts per trillion (ppt). For reference, it is similar to finding a single drop of food coloring in a container filled with 18 million gallons of water.

PFAS water contamination in the United States

According to the environmental organization Waterkeeper Alliance, the following states have the highest number of PFAS detections in surface water:

  • Maryland
  • Georgia
  • Florida
  • North Carolina
  • California
  • Alabama

File your PFAS water contamination claim with the help of ELG Law

ELG Law is here to assist if you believe your illness may be linked to PFAS-contaminated drinking water. With over 30 years of experience in toxic exposure cases, we have helped dozens of individuals to pursue compensation. We work on a contingency fee basis, meaning you won’t pay unless we recover compensation for you. To begin, prepare the following evidence:

  • Medical records confirming a diagnosis of PFAS-linked disease listed above
  • Proof of residency showing that you lived in an area and relied on a PFAS-contaminated drinking water source for at least 1 year.

Let us guide you through the legal process and help you obtain the compensation you deserve.
