Asbestos generators

Asbestos was placed in generators to prevent them from burning, but in time the machinery became worn down and left the asbestos in a friable state, making its fibers prone to be released into the air when the workers came in direct contact with this kind of equipment.

Due to the asbestos’ ability to withstand extreme heat, the mineral was included in the production of generators. This type of machinery was usually lined with asbestos in order to prevent a possible explosion.

Used for security reasons, asbestos continued to disappoint, as constant heat made the material turn friable and extremely dangerous for the people performing maintenance work. This put a lot of stress on the microscopic fibers that would later be released when the material got disturbed. You could have been exposed if:

  • You worked directly with asbestos lined generators
  • You performed maintenance work in factories or plants
  • You helped manufacture generators before the 1980’s
  • You worked on ships
