The type of putty that was most likely to contain this poisonous mineral was the intumescent one. Subjected to heat, this type would swell fireproofing the surfaces it was applied to.
In time, the asbestos containing putty would break down and become friable letting loose fibers contaminate the environment. As most of the times this material was used around windows, interacting with them would have made you directly exposed to the airborne asbestos fibers. You could have been exposed if:
- You found yourself working in old structures
- You helped install or remove windows before the 1980’s
- You performed demolition work
- You did remodeling work in old buildings
