Valisure testing results
According to Valisure's testing results, 3 Old Spice deodorants showed signs of benzene contamination in different concentrations. In one product, benzene levels were almost 9 times higher than what the FDA tolerates.
- Old Spice Pure Sport - 17.7 ppm avg.
- Old Spice Below Deck - 6.52 ppm avg.
- Old Spice Sweat Defense Strong Swagger - 4.54 ppm avg.
Although benzene contamination was detected in certain deodorants, not all Old Spice branded products were affected. Valisure's results show that no benzene was detected in the following range of Old Spice deodorants:
- Old Spice - Fiji, Aluminum Free, Re Fresh, Scent Technology
- Old Spice - Sea Spray, Lasting Cologne, Refresh Scent Technology
- Old Spice - Wolfthorn, Aluminum Free, Re Fresh, Scent Technology
- Old Spice - Dragonblast, Aluminum Free, Re Fresh, Scent Technology
- Old Spice - Swagger, Aluminum Free, Re Fresh, Scent Technology
- Old Spice - Krakengard, Aluminum Free, Re Fresh, Scent Technology
It's important to note that no manufacturer uses benzene as an ingredient in deodorants and antiperspirants; contamination is considered to occur due to the byproducts of propellants used in sprays, which include alcohol, propane, isobutane, butane, and hydrofluorocarbon 152a.

After benzene contamination became public knowledge and consumers began filing complaints, Procter & Gamble issued a voluntary recall that included 8 Old Spice deodorants "out of an abundance of caution."
