Asbestos asphalt

As it started to deteriorate, asphalt made with asbestos required repairing or, as a last option, removal. Asbestos fibers used to be mixed with gravel and would become airborne as the asphalt was disturbed by the laborer working.

This petroleum-based material was used mainly for road construction and, to a limited extent, for roofing work. Due to the harsh conditions of winter, salt was used on roads in order to prevent freezing, which made their breakdown happen faster. Adding asbestos to the mix was seen as a possible solution to strengthen the quality of the road.

Asbestos asphalt was less likely to become friable but its removal posed a serious threat to the laborers, as toxic fibers would break off and become airborne. You could have been exposed if:

  • You worked directly with asbestos asphalt
  • You were at the site where asbestos asphalt was applied or removed
