Asbestos bonding cement

Same as with regular cement, this product needed to be mixed before it was applied. During the mixing process, asbestos fibers were released into the environment, and when it needed to be removed the fibers became disturbed by the worker’s impact, getting dispersed all around.

PRODUCT USE

1964 - 1979 (15 years)

Prior to the 1980s, bonding cement was made durable and flame-resistant by adding asbestos fibers into the mixing process. There were even cases where up to 15% of asbestos was included into the final product.

Regarding bonding cement, the highest risk of exposure to asbestos came from damaging it, by accident or due to a removal activity. In any of these cases, asbestos fibers would have been released into the near environment. You could have been exposed if:

  • You found yourself on construction sites where bonding cement was used
  • You worked directly with asbestos cement products
  • You helped apply or remove bonding cement
  • You performed demolition work
  • You did remodeling work in old buildings
