Among the manufacturers of sunscreen whose products Valisure found to contain benzene is Coppertone. However, several months after the results of the study were made public, the company voluntarily recalled five aerosol products. Alarmingly, some of the sprays were specifically made for children.

The voluntary recall issued by Coppertone, a company whose history dates back to 1944, concerns five different sunscreen products manufactured between January and June of last year. This voluntary recall has been noted in detail by the personnel at the Food and Drug Administration. According to the announcement, the affected sunscreen was made on a range of dates between January 10 and June 15, and the products were subsequently distributed in a timely fashion, which means that consumers most likely bought the dangerous sunscreen earlier last year. The recall was made on September 30, 2021.

A series of random sampling on various batches of sunscreens found that benzene was present in the products. Interestingly, the recall came after the results of the study led by the independent laboratory Valisure were made public, the same way it happened in the case of Johnson & Johnson, which also took off the market 5 sunscreen products in July of 2021. The following are the Coppertone sunscreen products the company decided to recall:

  • Coppertone Pure & Simple SPF 50, 5oz (Lot# TN00CJ4 and Lot# TN00BR2)
  • Coppertone Pure & Simple Kids SPF 50, 5oz (Lot# TN00857, Lot# TN00CJV, Lot# TN00854, and Lot# TN00855)
  • Coppertone Pure & Simple Baby SPF 50, 5oz (Lot# TN009GH, Lot# TN0083K, and Lot# TN0083J)
  • Coppertone Sport Mineral SPF 50, 5oz (Lot# TN008KU and Lot# TN008KV)
  • Coppertone Sport Spray SPF 50, 1.6 oz travel size (Lot# TN00BU3)

In addition to recalling the sunscreen contaminated with benzene, Coppertone is also directing any impacted customers to a website to request a refund for any of the five products. Furthermore, customers can contact 888.921.1537 during weekday business hours, namely from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific time, if they have questions or concerns. According to a statement to the Food and Drug Administration, the company officials claim that they had not received "any reports of adverse events related to this recall" prior to when the recall had occurred, a similar precaution that other manufacturers took earlier in 2021.
