In the United States, farmers face some of the highest risks of paraquat exposure. These workers regularly handle one of the most widely used yet highly toxic herbicides in modern agriculture, which operates on approximately 2 million commercial farms covering 922 million acres.
Under demanding conditions, farmers cultivate, harvest, maintain, pack, and plant crops while managing livestock under hazardous pesticide residues.
Farmers can still be exposed to paraquat through spray drift, direct contact with treated crops and soil, spills, splashes, and malfunctioning equipment, even if they follow best management practices.

According to studies, prolonged paraquat exposure increases the risk of Parkinson's disease by 250%,  and many farmers are unaware that their work contributes to this debilitating neurological disorder. Dopamine is produced by the substantia nigra pars compacta in the brain after herbicides are absorbed through the respiratory system or through skin absorption.

Neurotoxic effects gradually destroy dopamine-producing neurons, resulting in Parkinson's disease symptoms. Paraquat was introduced in 1962, and thousands of farmers have developed this irreversible condition since then, often years after their initial exposure.

Paraquat products handled by farmers

Farmers across the United States have handled paraquat sold under numerous brand names, often without adequate warning labels regarding Parkinson's disease risks. The herbicide was applied directly to fields, mixed in tanks, and sprayed using various equipment, creating multiple exposure pathways. With poor ventilation in enclosed spaces like equipment cabs and storage facilities, paraquat residues would linger on clothing, skin, and equipment long after application.

Parkinson's disease makes you eligible to file a claim

If you developed Parkinson's disease as a result of occupational paraquat exposure while working as a farmer, you are eligible for compensation. The experienced lawyers at ELG Law can evaluate your case and file claims on your behalf against negligent paraquat manufacturers. If you are too ill, a family member can help you with the legal process. In the unfortunate event that you pass away before recovering compensation, your surviving family members will receive compensation on your behalf.

To determine eligibility, our legal team will review your work history, medical diagnosis, and exposure details. A number of early warning signs of this disease include tremors in fingers, thumbs, hands, and chins, small handwriting, loss of smell, difficulty sleeping, hunched posture, and masking of faces.
