A veteran does not need a detailed memory of every incident to establish a history of AFFF contact. Recalling a specific qualification, watch station, or assignment can help reconstruct the duties tied to that role, since these qualifications often required sailors to train with or operate equipment built for Class B fuel fires, where AFFF served as the standard extinguishing agent for decades.
Sailors who remember being assigned to a repair locker, serving as part of a fire party, working crash and salvage, standing aviation firefighting watches, operating foam systems, or instructing others in firefighting technique were very likely working with AFFF on a recurring basis.
According to OPNAVINST 3541.1H, advanced firefighting qualifications include several PQS watch stations tied directly to fuel fire response. Each of these qualifications came with its own set of duties, and several required sailors to work with AFFF on a routine basis rather than only during live emergencies. The qualifications below are among those most closely tied to regular AFFF contact:
Damage Controlmen are the rating most closely tied to firefighting, but many other sailors earned firefighting qualifications as part of their duties. OPNAV guidance specifically lists aviation firefighting, emergency parties, and fire marshals among the personnel required to take part in damage control qualification programs. Sailors assigned to the following roles may have also handled AFFF regularly:
If you're trying to piece together whether your Navy service involved AFFF, these questions can help jog your memory:
Even a single yes can indicate a service history with repeated AFFF contact, even when the specifics of individual incidents have faded with time.
If your Navy qualifications or duty assignments involved firefighting, damage control, or foam system operation, and you were later diagnosed with a linkable cancer, your service records may support an AFFF claim.
