Damage controlmen

In the U.S. Navy, damage controlmen act as maintenance and emergency repair specialists. They are responsible for damage control, ship stability, firefighting, fire prevention and chemical, biological and radiological warfare defense. Damage controlmen are also in charge of training shipboard personnel in the operation, maintenance and repair of damage control systems and equipment and life saving devices. Since they had to perform maintenance and repair work to numerous components of various equipment, damage controlmen were exposed to asbestos to a great extent, which places this military rating at high risk of developing a serious disease in the future.

Claim Evaluation

As a damage controlman, one was responsible for operating, repairing, and maintaining firefighting systems and equipment, damage control equipment and chemical, biological, and radiological defense equipment, performing emergency repairs to decks, structures, and hulls by pipe patching, plugging and shoring, and training the ship’s military personnel in chemical, biological and radiological defense. They were also in charge of serving as the ship’s fire marshals and firefighting leaders. Asbestos exposure was high in this U.S. Navy rating since damage controlmen often handled asbestos products without any protective equipment when they would perform maintenance and repair work. The rating of damage controlman is relatively new, dating back to 1948.
