Asbestos gaskets

These products were frequently used in the pipefitting trade and, at that time, these were also made of asbestos. To be perfectly fitted they would need to be ground or sanded to the desired size, and by doing that the air filled with asbestos fibers.

For manufacturing these types of gaskets, asbestos was heavily used for nearly a century. Even though chrysotile (white asbestos) was used in the majority of cases, crocidolite (blue asbestos) was preferred when the gasket needed to be resistant to acid.

Containing up to 70 percent asbestos in their composition, gaskets were extremely dangerous when they required replacement. Due to being extremely damaged, they needed to be scraped off, and by doing that, asbestos fibers would quickly contaminate the environment. You could have been exposed if:

  • You found yourself working on old factory machinery and piping systems
  • You have worked on cars built before the 1980’s
  • You worked directly with asbestos gaskets
  • You performed maintenance work in factories or power plants
  • You helped manufacture asbestos-containing gaskets
