Asbestos cloth

It had many uses mainly in construction and electrical work. To apply it or remove it as insulation, the asbestos cloth needed to be cut, thus releasing microscopic fibers of asbestos into the air. Protective gear was also made using asbestos cloth.

Asbestos cloth was spun in a similar way to cotton. Sometimes, the cloth was made with as much as 100% asbestos. Cotton or even rayon fibers were added in other types of asbestos cloth. This product was highly regarded for its flame-resistant properties.

Worn asbestos cloth was extremely dangerous for the people handling it, as asbestos particles were released with every minor disturbance. Once the wrapping material got damaged, the asbestos fibers turned friable as a result. You could have been exposed if:

  • You wore protective gear made with asbestos cloth
  • You worked in an asbestos textile mill
  • You found yourself working in old factories or plants
