Grissom Air Reserve Base claims
Initially known as Bunker Hill Naval Air Station, this base opened in 1942 in Indiana as a Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard training site. It got its current name in 1968 in memory of local astronaut and Lieutenant Colonel Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom. The facility was originally a war bomber training site and became an Air Force Reserve location in 1994, functioning as a joint-use civil airport/military and refueling base since. During its active duty, Grissom Air Reserve Base trained firefighters to extinguish aircraft fires by using AFFF. This toxic fire-extinguishing foam exposes people to extremely harmful chemicals linked to deadly health conditions. A consequence of this type of substance is that it can also easily contaminate drinking water with PFOS and PFOAs, which also affect those living near military facilities through their dangerous and persistent nature.
