Celotex

Celotex Corporation of America was established in the 1920s as an importer of bagasse fibreboard. In 1964, it was purchased by Jim Walter. The company’s main activities were producing and distributing building products along with mining and processing asbestos fibers through another subsidiary, Carey Canada Inc. Celotex has an extensive history of using this carcinogenic mineral in manufacturing its products. These contaminated materials were heavily used by construction workers, boiler workers, pipefitters, and people working in shipyards.

Celotex employees exposed to asbestos

As another company which did not refrain from incorporating the mineral in its building products, Celotex has been using the carcinogenic mineral ever since the beginning, in 1925. Thereby, it has knowingly exposed thousands of people to it for nearly 50 years, many of whom came to suffer from terrible diseases several decades later. The products manufactured by the company were used for building both residential and commercial structures. No longer able to pay out workers injured by occupational exposure, they filed for bankruptcy protection in 1990 and eight years later, the company established a trust fund to compensate future victims. At the moment, their asbestos trust fund has more than $1.2 million.

The family members of Celotex workers are susceptible to lung disease and cancer, too

Industrial hygiene and the safety of workers were two aspects manufacturers were lacking during the last century, which explains why so many people have developed terrible diseases over recent decades. As the company policy did not require them to change clothes or shower at the end of the day, Celotex workers would carry asbestos fibers home every day, unknowingly endangering the health of their families. Children would commonly inhale toxic fibers upon greeting their fathers, whereas wives would breathe in the fibers while laundering their husbands’ work clothes. Today, 8% of victims are women, most of whom were secondarily exposed to this carcinogen.
