Have any sunscreen products been recalled?

Yes. Shortly after the independent pharmacy Valisure made public the results of their study concerning the benzene in 78 out of the 300 tested products, two major companies have recalled some of their sunscreens.

Johnson & Johnson and Coppertone have both recalled some of their sunscreen products

On July 14, 2021, Johnson & Johnson voluntarily recalled five sunscreen products. Four of the products the company took off the shelves are manufactured by Neutrogena, and one is made by Aveeno. Johnson & Johnson stated that internal testing found low levels of benzene in some products. It also advised consumers to stop using contaminated sunscreen products. The following are the sunscreen products recalled by the company:

  • Beach Defense
  • Cool Dry Sport
  • Invisible Daily
  • Ultra Sheer
  • Aveeno Protect + Refresh

However, while Johnson & Johnson claimed that the concentration of benzene in their sunscreen "would not be expected to cause adverse health effects," the internal report of Consumer Reports "A Health Hazard Evaluation" that has recently been released found that the levels of benzene in the products of the company were 5 to 12 times above the safe limit, which could result in serious adverse effects with regular use. As for Coppertone, the following are the sunscreen products the company recalled, also voluntarily, in September 2021:

  • Coppertone Pure & Simple
  • Coppertone Pure & Simple Kids
  • Coppertone Pure & Simple Baby
  • Coppertone Sport Mineral
  • Coppertone Sport Spray
